AISI 1065 carbon steel

AISI 1065 carbon steel main characteristics and uses

AISI 1065 carbon steel is a commonly used American standard structural steel with a carbon content of about 0.65%. It is known for its excellent hardness and good wear resistance. The higher carbon content gives 1065 steel a fine-grained microstructure, which is very suitable for applications where edge retention and strength are critical. Its main characteristics and uses can be summarized as follows:

1. Main characteristics

1.1 Chemical composition: The main chemical composition of AISI 1065 carbon steel includes carbon (C) 0.60-0.70%, silicon (Si) 0.15-0.37%, manganese (Mn) 0.50-0.90%, phosphorus (P) ≤0.040%, sulfur (S) ≤0.050% (some data show that its maximum value is 0.035%), chromium (Cr) ≤0.25%, nickel (Ni) ≤0.30%. In addition, trace amounts of other elements such as copper (Cu) may also be included.

1.2 Mechanical properties: AISI 1065 carbon steel has high strength and hardness. Its tensile strength is usually between 600-925MPa, its yield strength is between 350-690MPa, and its elongation is between 10-21.5%. The hardness is generally HRC 20-25.

1.3 Heat treatment performance: AISI 1065 carbon steel can be subjected to heat treatment processes such as normalizing, quenching, and tempering to obtain different structures and properties.

1.4 Poor weldability: The high carbon content causes cracks during welding, requiring special methods and preheating, which makes processing harder and costlier.

1.5 Poor cold workability: After quenching and tempering, the difficulty of cold working increases. It has high requirements for processing technology and equipment. However, the cold workability is better in the annealed state.

1.6 Low toughness and plasticity: Compared with soft steel, its toughness and plasticity are relatively low, and it is limited in some applications that require high toughness and plasticity.

2. Main uses

2.1 Mechanical manufacturing: AISI 1065 carbon steel is suitable for manufacturing various mechanical parts, such as shafts, gears, etc. It has high strength and durability, can withstand high stress, and has good wear resistance.

2.2 Spring manufacturing: Due to its high strength and hardness, high elastic limit and fatigue strength. AISI 1065 carbon steel is often used to manufacture various springs, such as pressure regulating and speed regulating springs, force measuring springs, and round and square spiral springs on general machinery.

2.3 Tool steel: used to manufacture cutting tools, stamping dies, etc., and has good application effects in occasions requiring high hardness and wear resistance.

2.4 Cutting tools and sharpening tools: such as saw blades, knives, etc., are particularly suitable for occasions requiring high hardness and wear resistance.

2.5 Washers and fasteners: can meet certain strength and hardness requirements.

2.6 Automobile and aerospace: AISI 1065 carbon steel is also widely used in automobiles, aviation, aerospace and other fields, such as for manufacturing automotive parts, aircraft structural parts, etc.

2.7 Other fields: In addition, AISI 1065 carbon steel can also be used to manufacture high wear-resistant parts, such as rollers, as well as integral quenching ejector pins for plastic molds and die-casting molds.

In general, AISI 1065 carbon steel has a wide range of applications in many fields due to its good mechanical properties and processing performance. When using it, it is necessary to follow the relevant national standards and operating procedures to ensure safety and efficiency.
